Opening the Bible: Tips to Help You Start Reading the Bible on a Daily Basis

Bible 1The bible is the most popular book throughout the entire world. It was written over a period of 1,500 years and contains 66 books, each with hundreds of versus. According to a Huffington Post article, while 88 percent of American’s say they own a bible and believe it to be sacred, only 29 percent claim that they read it on a regular basis.

Why do we turn away from the bible? Maybe we are too busy or scared that it will be too complicated or simply lacking faith. Reading the bible can be a cumbersome task, and sometimes it’s hard to understand the value in it, but if we are intentional there are tremendous benefits in our spiritual health. Christ is here to lead you through your life and doesn’t want to leave you feeling alone and isolated.

Beginning to read the bible on a regular basis will provide you with a beacon of hope for any struggles you’re dealing with and help remind you that no matter what you’re going through, God is always by your side.

If you don’t read the bible regularly, it can be intimidating to get started. Consider these tips to not only get started, but develop a daily habit:

Bible 2Schedule time into your calendar on a daily basis.

Reading the bible should be treated like any other of your daily habits. You have specific times during the day when you shower, brush your teeth, go to the gym, or run errands. Start by setting aside 10 minutes each day to sit down and read your bible. Doing so will help make it become a routine. Dedicating a small amount of time to further your relationship with Jesus will help keep the spirit alive inside you and have positive ramifications throughout your daily life.

Find a quiet place.

It can be hard with life, work, kids, and a house to find a quiet place to even hear your own thoughts. But this is essential for bible readers. Seek out a space where you feel comfortable and serene. This will make reading the bible more meaningful and help you fully connect with Christ. Some suggestions include your bedroom, the library, a quiet park bench, or even at your church.

Bible 5Pray before you start.

Before you begin, take time to speak quietly with the Lord. Ask him to guide you through this process and help you to understand his message. Remember, you don’t need to become an expert of the scriptures, just be open to receiving God’s word. Asking for his guidance will help you become more confident in your reading abilities and realize how easy it can be to connect with Christ through the bible.

Grab a notebook to jot down your thoughts while you read.

Taking time to reflect on what you’ve read is key to understanding. But sometimes the thoughts you have while reading the bible can be complicated and difficult to understand. Writing down your feelings or reactions to the scripture will help you clarify your thoughts and bring you to a better understanding. Keeping a notebook also provides you with a great resource to go back and look at a summary of what you’ve already read.

Commit to reading the whole bible.

Even the difficult parts are important. The bible was inspired by the word of the Lord and learning about it in it’s entirely will help you understand its deeper meanings. Don’t waste time worrying about how long it is taking you to read. Instead focus on obtaining a slow and steady pace that helps you become close with God and understand his Word.

Bible 3Keep your bible in plain sight.

Some days it seems there just isn’t enough time to make room for Christ in your life. But those are the days you need him the most. Put your bible somewhere you will see it every day, such as on your night stand or kitchen table. This visual memory jog will help remind you that you need God in your life and ensure that you continue to read it every day.

Keep the big picture in mind.

When you’re reading the bible, sometimes it can be easy to get caught up in all the stories being told. Remember to keep God’s main message in mind and to focus on the big picture. Remember that Christ died for your sins to give you a better life in heaven. Reflect on how much you are loved by the Lord, no matter how many sins you’ve committed. And never forget that with God in your life, you can never be led astray.

Happy Reading.
